www.celebpoker.co.uk – Early Phases of Tournaments

celebpoker.co.uk – The early phases of tournaments offer both opportunities and dangers. When the blinds are small you can often get to see many flops cheaply. I personally like to see numerous flops in the first level of blinds, although care must be taken if there are one or two aggressive players at the table who like to make raises preflop on many hands.

Another point I feel is important, is that although there is value in taking a cheap flop on the off chance that you will hit the flop very well, you must be cautious of the fact that there will most likely be many players in the hand. This means that if you half hit your hand, your estimations of what you are up against should be higher.

This is one of the main dangers I feel, because you can make a fairly strong hand and end up getting yourself into trouble. Generally though, these early stages are a good time to build your stack. In many respects, I feel that this part of a tournament is when players play the most poker, so to speak. There are many instances where you need to make good reads and play well in order to maximise your profits as you will be seeing more cards than in the latter stages.

Personally I think it is often best to be careful and not gamble too much in the early stages of tournaments. If you are in a marginal situation in terms of whether to make a call, I feel it is best to wait until a better moment because you know you will get chances if you still have a reasonable amount of chips to work with. When tournaments reach the later stages, the larger blinds do not give you quite as many chances.
