Coralpoker.co.uk – Controlling Emotion and Resisting Tilt
www.coralpoker.co.uk – Emotions are perhaps the most costly thing when it comes to poker, as generally, the more frustrated you get, the more you become prone to errors of judgement. There isn’t a lot we can do to control our emotions entirely, but I do feel we can channel them into concentrating harder rather than becoming exasperated at what appears to be everything going wrong for us.
One of the biggest mistakes players make I feel, is to continue playing once their emotions have got the best of them. If you are irritated, or angry in the slightest, I would advise you take a couple of hours off from poker. This is because despite what you might think at the time, you will always play your best poker when you are calm and collected. When playing online, I used to suffer with tilt to an extent, but soon found that the best cure if I was mid tournament, was to take 15 minutes away from the table and read something non poker related. For some reason this distraction for the mind seemed to calm me down because I wasn’t thinking about the hand tht had annoyed me.
If you do find that you get emotional in the face of bad beats and outdraws, try and focus your displeasure on concentrating harder and playing better. If at all possible, it’s best to put these hands out of your mind entirely. In live games I seem to not be at all susceptible to tilt which is good, I always try and think matter of factly about the chips I have, and what I need to do with them in the next certain number of hands.
