Coralpoker.co.uk – Case Study 2

www.coralpoker.co.uk – Having been dealt (7d,2d) in the big blind, I got one caller under the gun and saw a flop of (4d,5s,Kd). I checked, and my opponent bet out fairly strong with 1,600. I called, and the turn brought a (3h). Again I decided to check, and hoped my opponent wouldn’t make me pay too much to see the river. As soon as my opponent checked too I immediately began to think there was a lot of weakness in the first bet. It is commonplace for opponents to put out a bet on the flop after it has been checked, even if they do not have any sort of hand, as it is likely to win the pot quite often.

The river brought a blank (8c) unfortunately, but I felt that I had to trust my read that my opponent was weak, and so I moved all in for 5,500. After much consideration my opponent let their hand go and I picked up the pot with my 7 high.
Needless to say, had my opponent have put out any sort of continuation bet on the turn, there was no way I could have made this move on the river. The key was, that the check behind me on the turn, left me feeling that there was no real strength in the original raise on the flop. So unless my opponent had some sort of small pair on the flop that became two pair on the river, there was no way they could call my all in. Let us also remember that to have called preflop from under the gun, it was almost impossible for my opponent to be holding that type of hand anyway. coralpoker.co.uk
