www.celebpoker.co.uk – This particular play is one which I would consider, quite advanced. There are not many amateur players out there who have the perception to know when the right time is to employ this play, and the courage to carry it out. Just today the opportunity arose for me to employ this play, when there were three players in an unraised pot.
The blinds were enough to build a pot, and when the first player checked to me, I thought briefly, before checking too. I know the third player I was against will often put out a tester bet in this position to try and pick up the pot, and so I was already formulating my plan when I checked. My opponent min raised 400 chips, and the first checker, folded. I then came over the top for another 1,200 chips which, considering my stack was only 4,500, was trusting my read of the situation implicitly. The raiser folded his (6,9) face up, declaring "I was only bluffing at it, I can’t call you". At which point, I turned my (4,5) over (for a worse high card) and said "I know you can’t". That kind of play usually gets players to give you more respect in pots, especially if they see you do it with a short stack.
Although it is also a great feeling to pull off such a move, you have to be very careful about when the correct time is to do so. I had perfect position to do so in this instance, so be aware of any other players that are still in the hand, and choose to use these more tricky plays, sparingly.
