888poker.com – Case Study 1
www.888poker.com – This was an interesting hand which I saw take place today, and one which is worth examining I feel. In an unraised pot with three players the flop came down (4s,5s,As). Player 1 (first to act) raises 800 into a pot of 600 chips, player 2 folds, and at this point, player 3 reraises to 2,000. After thinking for a very long time, player 1 folds (6s,2s), for a small flush. Player 3 declares that he had (Ac,Ks) for a nut flush draw and a pair of aces. First of all, if player 3 had (A,K) you would wonder why there was no preflop raise, but more importantly, the fold from player 1 is very interesting, seeing as he had already made a flush on the flop.
The reasoning behind the fold though, is actually quite sound. The moment he is reraised to 2,000 on the flop, player 1 knows that there is a big pot brewing, and if you think about it, any spade on the turn or river is going to make his 6 flush incredibly vulnerable. Another point to consider is that if the board pairs, he could be almost drawing dead against a full house.
If his opponent has a flush already made too, he is also in the same predicament. As player 1 rightly stated after the hand, in this position, you either have to come over the top with another reraise, or fold the hand. There isn’t really much to be gained from flat calling, because the only card that will improve your hand is the 3 of spades for a straight flush. So when that doesn’t fall, you still have no idea where you are, and it is unlikely to be checked down by your opponent.
Personally, I don’t mind the fold play that was made, it is a very cautious play, but shows good perception of the problems on the flop, and the potential problems that will remain, on the turn.
